YLC Quoted in Article on Incarceration of Young Children
YLC Staff Attorney Sue Burrell was interviewed for the latest in a series of articles by the San Jose Mercury News on the incarceration of young children in Santa Clara County. After a learning of frequent incarceration of young children, the Santa Clara County Juvenile Justice Commission is issuing a report recommending the imposition a lower age limit for incarceration in the County’s Juvenile Hall. Sue spoke to the tendency to blame the young children when they do poorly in custody, when the real issue is a need for system officials to mobilize to prevent young children from being incarcerated and to effectively intervene when they come to the attention of the juvenile justice system.
