SB716 Gains Support!

A state senate bill to ensure postsecondary education opportunities for high school graduates in juvenile custody gained strong bipartisan support and a 7-0 vote in the California Senate Public Safety Committee on April 9, 2019. The bill, SB 716, is authored by Senator Holly Mitchell and sponsored by Youth Law Center. A formerly incarcerated College of San Mateo student testified in support of the bill, describing his own experience of completing his GED while in custody and then spending 8 more months “inside” with no opportunities to continue his education. The bill will be heard in Senate Education Committee on April 24, 2019.
