Nashville Banner 7/15/24: Children in Tennessee Can Now be Tried as Adults for Shoplifting or Stealing a Gun, or Even Attempting

The law that went into effect July 1 is the first in Tennessee to allow transfer of children as young as 15 to adult court for nonviolent crimes. In this article, our Tennessee-based staff attorney Jasmine Miller “suggested that a preoccupation with retail theft in the pandemic could be part of the motivation behind this legislation, despite the fact that losses from retail theft in the U.S. proved to be overstated.”
