Groups Demand Due Process for Immigrant Youth
YLC signed on to a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, urging the Attorney General to halt the government’s ongoing practice of pursuing deportation proceedings against children who do not have counsel and to guarantee that every child facing deportation is provided a lawyer. The government routinely brings children, many of them as young as toddlers, into immigration court where they are forced to defend themselves without counsel. Many of these children face violence in their home counties and have strong claims for asylum. A total of 177 children’s rights, civil rights, human rights, faith based, legal services providers and immigrants’ rights organizations signed the letter.
