In the United States, up to 19% of teens experience sexual or physical dating violence, about half face stalking or harassment, and as many as 65% report being psychologically abused (“Teen Dating Violence,” Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, U.S. Department of Justice, 2022). This presentation by Jenny Horne, Directing Attorney in the Teen Parent Project and Protecting Victims of Domestic Violence Project at the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, aims to help civil legal advocates understand Transition Age Youth’s options and rights about seeking protective orders in family court, family court options for young parents, teens’ rights to voice an opinion about their own custody, and how family court proceedings can help immigrant youth who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both of their own parents. The program will provide an overview of Family law restraining order options for youth, child custody and support options for teen parents, teens’ rights to voice an opinion in family court regarding their own custody, and Special Immigrant Juvenile options in Family court. 1.5 hours of general MCLE credit will be available for California attorneys.
